The House Passed an Awful Health Care Bill. Tell the Senate to Oppose It!
The petition to members of the U.S. Senate says the following:
You must oppose the new bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act. This bill would be a disaster for working people like me. It would gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions, take away health care from tens of millions of people, raise health care costs for millions more, decimate Medicaid and give a huge tax break to the super-rich and corporate CEOs, while taxing workplace health benefits. We need a health care plan that expands coverage for everyone, not one that cuts it. Please oppose this bill.
Paulo Augusto,
I’ve seen a lot of shameful votes come out of Congress in the past couple of years, but Thursday’s vote to pass the despicable new Republican health care bill could be the worst.
There is a glimmer of hope, though. Right now, there are several Republican senators who are against the bill or who haven’t said whether they’d support it. That’s because of the pressure people are putting on their lawmakers. We can stop this bill, but only if we show there is a groundswell against it.
We’re going to work harder than ever to stop this horrible bill—and I want to make sure you’re ready to fight with us.
We need to make this bill so toxic, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won’t be able to bring it up for a vote.
Our principle in opposing it is simple: Everyone has a right to comprehensive, affordable health care. This bill takes us far, far in the opposite direction.
It guts protections for people with cancer, diabetes and other pre-existing conditions. It will take away health benefits from 24 million people by 2026, hurt millions more people by taxing the health benefits they get through a job, decimate Medicaid and cut funding for Medicare, while doing nothing about out-of-control prescription drug prices.
Republicans also added tons of tax breaks for the super-rich, corporations and health care CEOs—hundreds of billions of dollars, in fact—which will be paid for by cuts to health benefits for seniors, people with disabilities and families struggling to make ends meet.
In solidarity,
Rich
