A POWERFUL REBUKE TO THE CORRUPT ESTABLISHMENT

Dear Compatriots from Georgia State,

One of the ways we effectively oppose Trump's right wing extremism is with strong and progressive leadership at the local and state level.

One of those leaders is Georgia State Senator Vincent Fort who is running for Mayor of Atlanta, Georgia.

Vincent Fort has always been a powerful ally of our movement.

As a state senator, he was arrested for protesting Wall Street greed with Occupy Atlanta, and again when protesting a lack of Medicaid expansion in the state of Georgia. He drafted and passed the strongest law against predatory home lending in the nation, and he has been a tireless advocate for reforming our broken criminal justice system.

Senator Fort is a popular Atlanta politician, especially in low-income African-American neighborhoods and, with our help, he can become Atlanta's next Mayor.

When we started our political revolution, very few elected officials had the courage to stand with us. Georgia State Senator Vincent Fort was one of the first, and he paid a hefty price for it.

The establishment in Georgia did everything they could to exact their revenge on Senator Fort – they even recruited a primary opponent to run against him in the last election cycle as punishment. They failed to take him down then – and now that he’s running to be the next Mayor of Atlanta, we expect the entrenched political establishment and their billionaire backers to do everything in their power to defeat him.

We need Vincent Fort’s leadership in the Atlanta Mayor’s office. Winning this campaign will send a strong message to the establishment that the struggle continues to create a government, at the local, state and federal level, that works for all of us, not just the one percent.

Georgia state senators are forbidden from raising money into their campaign accounts during legislative session starting January 9th. That means that we have to do as much for Senator Fort as we can before this fundraising deadline.

If enough of us are willing to come together right now, then we can elect one of our own as a powerful rebuke to the corrupt establishment. And Senator Fort will be able to focus on fighting for the people of Georgia without having to worry about his mayoral campaign next week.

Contribute $3 before January 9th as a way of letting Vincent Fort know that he has the support of our political revolution.

We know how powerful this movement is when millions of people come together to support our political revolution. Vincent Fort joined together with us when we needed him the most. Now it’s our turn to be there for him.

When he visited Puerto Rico last May, Bernie called for the release of Oscar López Rivera, a Puerto Rican activist who is serving an unjust sentence.

Oscar was a Puerto Rican nationalist and member of FALN (Armed Forces of National Liberation) who was strongly against the U.S. colonization of Puerto Rico.

Imprisoned for his political opposition 35 years ago, Oscar has become one of the longest serving political prisoners in history. Much of that time has been spent in solitary confinement.

President Obama has the power before he leaves office to grant Oscar clemency, returning him to his family and home in Puerto Rico. Time is quickly running out and if Oscar is not pardoned by Obama, he will unfairly die in prison.

Our Revolution created a video about Oscar's story, including conversations with his daughter, Clarisa, and elected officials who are joining her in calling for his release.

Watch our video to learn about Oscar's story and please share it with your friends and family to spread the word about why it is so important that he be granted clemency.

Tomorrow, January 6, is an important day in Puerto Rico. Not only is it the birthday of Oscar López Rivera – when he will turn 74 years old – it is also Three Kings Day, an important holiday for Puerto Ricans.

Three Kings Day is a time to exchange gifts, particularly for children. Let's give Oscar's daughter, Clarisa, the gift of having her father back.

Watch and share our video so that we can spread the message far and wide that Oscar López Rivera must be granted clemency.

This is as much a human rights issue as it is a criminal justice issue. Thank you for helping get the word out.

In less than one week, the new Republican Congress will begin their efforts to dismantle America’s health care system. Their goal is to take away health insurance from tens of millions of Americans, privatize Medicare, make massive cuts to Medicaid, increase prescription drug prices and defund Planned Parenthood.

At the same time, in the midst of a grotesque and growing level of income and wealth inequality, they want obscene tax breaks for the top one-tenth of 1 percent.

As we enter the new year, our message to the Republicans is simple and straight forward. You are not going to get away with it. You are not going to punish the elderly, disabled veterans, the children, the sick and the poor while you reward your billionaire friends.

Stopping this Republican assault on the working class of this country will require the active participation of millions of Americans in every community in our country. In fact, it will require nothing less than a political revolution that engages millions of people from all walks of life, regardless of whether they voted for Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump or anyone else.

On Sunday Jan. 15, Democratic members of Congress, trade unions, senior citizen groups, health care activists and all those who believe in economic and social justice are organizing a day of action called “Our First Stand: Save Health Care.” Rallies will be held around the country. Now I need to know that you’re in:

Add your name to demand that Congress protect and expand the health care needs of working families, not cut them. Tell Trump and Congress that they must pass legislation that makes the wealthy start paying their fair share of taxes instead of trying to slash life-or-death programs that tens of millions of Americans rely on.

Change will never happen from inside of Washington, D.C. — it will always come from our communities and the grassroots.

That is what the history of America is all about. Whether it’s the creation of the trade union movement, the women’s movement, the civil right’s movement, the environmental movement, the gay rights movement and more, justice prevails when we stand together. We lose when we are divided or apathetic.

So Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and I have asked my colleagues in Congress to organize events in their states and their districts where people can come together and make their voices heard. We will win when we are all in this fight together.

With Donald Trump set to take office and Republicans in control of Congress, it’s more important than ever that we recommit ourselves to building a movement that transforms this country and brings people together around an agenda that works for the working families of this country, and not just the 1 percent.

And Jan. 15 is a good day to begin that fight.

Please add your name to tell Congress that we will not accept horrific cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Planned Parenthood and that we will not allow millions to lose their health insurance. Tell Trump and Congress to represent all Americans, and not just wealthy campaign donors.
