Paulo Augusto,

Today marks the anniversary of the deadly January 6th insurrection at our Capitol.

Even as it was immediately clear to all of us that the attack was carried out by domestic terrorists, Republicans in Congress have spent the past year trying to rewrite history and absolve themselves and their leader Traitor Trump from all responsibility. We can’t let them get away with these dangerous lies.

We also must reckon with the fact that a disturbing number of veterans and active-duty members of the military took part in the attack on the Capitol. More than 1 in 10 of those charged in the attacks had a service record.

All military branches must undertake more intensive intelligence work at all installations. The goal should be to offer lettered agency support to our great chain of command, to identify, isolate and remove potential mutineers; guard against efforts by propagandists who use misinformation to subvert the chain of command; and understand how that and other misinformation spreads across the ranks after it is introduced by propagandists.

This is our community, so it’s our responsibility to help stop the spread of right-wing disinformation among military servicemembers and veterans. Otherwise the potential for some level of infection of our military, however unlikely, by extremists – a mirroring of societal or political breakdown – is possible.

The military and lawmakers have been gifted hindsight to prevent another insurrection from happening in the future — but they will succeed only if they take decisive action now.
