Clean power's day in court

Last year, we took the biggest step we’ve ever taken to cut carbon pollution. EPA’s Clean Power Plan puts the U.S. on a path to reduce emissions from our aging fossil-fuel-fired power plants by almost one-third below 2005 levels by 2030.

It took just hours for climate obstructionists to attack. Dozens of fossil fuel industry players, together with allied states, filed suit to overturn the plan.

Today, the Clean Power Plan finally its day in court.

By taking action against the biggest source of carbon pollution in the country, we’re showing the world that we’re serious about meeting our global commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement.

But if the Plan is struck down, the United States—the world’s second-largest emitter of carbon pollution—will lose it's most powerful tool to cut climate pollution.

We also risk setting off a chain reaction across the world as other countries follow suit and curtail their own climate action plans.

That’s why defending and successfully implementing the Clean Power Plan is at the heart of our strategic plan to slash global climate emissions.

We’re still $38,400 short of meeting our annual fundraising goal for our 2016 fiscal year, which ends on September 30. Will you make a donation of $35 to defend and advance clean energy in America?

EDF was at court this morning along with a diverse, bipartisan coalition of supporters from all across the country—including 18 states, 60 cities (see the map below!), leading consumer protection organizations, legal and technical experts, and dozens of our friends in the environmental and public health community who have joined forces to aid the Obama administration’s defense of clean energy.

Across America, cities are standing up for clean energy

P.S. Since this weekend, 433 donors have contributed a combined $15,025—that's an average gift of $34. Will you be #434? Please make a donation of $35 before we close the books on 2016 at midnight this Friday.

CORPORATION VS. PEOPLE ~SumOfUs

Paulo,

Water to drink, or water for mining?

Taxes used to pay for schools and hospitals, or tax dodging to keep corporate profits high?

Trade to close the gap between rich and poor nations, or which makes it even wider?

Budget busting bailouts for banks, or defending jobs and livelihoods for everybody?

The answers to these questions are obvious to most of us: human beings matter much more than sky high corporate profits.

But when you hear some CEOs and politicians talk, it can sound like these most obvious priorities are being turned on their head.

We built SumOfUs because we know it doesn't have to be that way. Human beings created corporations, and human beings can change them.

We can push politicians to make a firm stand on tax dodging. We can call halt on trade deals that make inequality worse, not better. We can shine a light on the murky world of lobbyists.

All of those things -- and many more -- are what the 10 million SumOfUs action takers have been doing since we launched five years ago.

We work hard to keep our costs down and our technology free for our members to use.

Can you become a SumOfUs Core Member to help cover the costs of running SumOfUs in the years to come?

When SumOfUs started in 2011, we weren't sure what to expect.

Would people share our worries about corporations misusing their power?

Would they agree that it would take people power to push the balance back in favour of people trying to get by, instead of wealthy business leaders and their politician friends?

The answer was better than we could have imagined.

There are now over10 million of us standing together to keep a check on corporate power.

We are part of a huge, global movement to push back on dangerous trade deals.

We are making huge inroads in cleaning up the palm oil supply chain. We are fighting hard to save the bees, and it’s starting to work.

Our costs aren't high.

The tools we need to do our jobs are laptops, internet connections, and the occasional trip to meet together to make plans for our work together in the future.

Many of our staff team work from home, so we don't have to pay for expensive offices.

But we can't do what we do for free.

Even more important: the more we can depend on regular donations, the more time we can spend running and winning campaigns.

Can you chip in whatever you can afford each month so we can carry on keeping a check on corporations?

Thanks for all that you do,
Kat, Hannah, and the team at SumOfUs

SumOfUs is a worldwide movement of people like you, working together to hold corporations accountable for their actions and forge a new, sustainable path for our global economy.

"But we must do much more to help the millions of Americans still working longer hours for lower wages"

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders
https://www.facebook.com/senatorsanders/?fref=nf

When President Obama took office almost eight years ago, we were losing 800,000 jobs a month and median family income was plummeting during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
Today, we are making progress but we must do much more to help the millions of Americans still working longer hours for lower wages.
While the Census Bureau report shows a welcome increase last year in median family income, the fact is that household incomes still are 1.6 percent below the 2007 level, the year before the last recession began.
The wealthy, meanwhile, have never had it so good.
We also must continue to fight persistent poverty and wage discrimination.
And while the Affordable Care Act has helped millions of people get access to health insurance, the Census Bureau still found that 29 million people remained uninsured. We must make health care a right, not a privilege. It is time for a Medicare-for-all, single payer system to provide better care at less cost to all Americans.
As a nation, we must do more to create jobs, raise wages, reduce poverty and provide equal pay for equal work.
We must end huge tax breaks for billionaires while children in this country go hungry.
We must stop sending our jobs to China and allowing corporations to hide profits overseas while there are massive unmet needs in every corner of this nation.

Our Revolution

Paulo Augusto,

Wall Street, big corporations, and special interests all want to pass the disastrous Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal (TPP).

They see the huge potential profits, and they're going to do everything they can to make sure it passes – and they especially hope it comes up for a vote in the lame duck session of Congress.

Working families want to defeat TPP because they know it means more of the same like other trade deals: more jobs moving overseas and more protections for corporations' reckless behavior.

Today is our day of action to defeat TPP, and we're setting an ambitious goal: we want Our Revolution supporters to help make 50,000 calls to Congress today.

Can you call your member of Congress and ask them to oppose TPP?Click here for talking points and to be connected to Congress.
You can also dial this number straight from your phone and contact your member of Congress:
We're targeting calls to the House of Representatives because that is our best chance at winning the fight against TPP.

If TPP passes Congress, that's it. It can't be changed. TPP can't be cancelled unless all 12 nations pull out.

We must defeat it before it's too late.

Our Revolution is helping lead a huge coalition of labor and environmental groups with millions of members who are committed to defeating TPP.

We're excited to have you as part of this effort.

Thank you.

Larry Cohen

Paulo Augusto,

So far, you’ve helped drive over 6,000 phone calls to Congress demanding they pass real conservative justice reform.

And it’s working!

We’ve been getting angry calls from Congress, begging us to stop. But we’re not backing down now. In fact, we’re doubling down. This conservative legislation will reduce crime and save taxpayers BILLIONS. And that’s the kind of legislation this country needs. If you agree, call these congressmen at 201-645-5722 right now. Tell them to support HR 3713 and HR 759 today.

Paulo Augusto, we’ve only got till 4:00 PM EST to make this happen. And while 6,000 phone calls are impressive, I fear it may not be enough. So, if you’ve already made a call, please make two more. This is that important. Paulo Augusto, I’m counting on you, please don’t let me down.

Call these critical Members of Congress at201-645-5722 right now. Tell them to support HR 3713 and HR 759.

Friends --

The fate of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) -- the destructive 12-nation trade agreement -- will be decided in the next few weeks.

That’s why dozens of organizations are working together to make TODAY a nationwide TPP Call-In Day — to get all of our elected representatives to publicly announce opposition to the TPP before the election.

TPP_National_Call-In_Day_4.png
Supporters of the TPP, including some of the world’s largest corporations, are currently working very hard to ensure passage of this agreement during in the lame-duck session of Congress later this year.

They know their only chance to get the TPP approved is to hold a vote right after the election when  representatives’ political accountability to constituents is at its lowest.

That’s why we are pressuring Members of Congress to declare their opposition to the TPP and to do so before Election Day.

The TPP was largely written by corporate lobbyists and negotiated in secret.

If passed by Congress, it brings the U.S. into a binding agreement that will weaken important consumer, worker, and environmental safeguards. It also gives corporations a new, shocking right to sue governments, in front of a private tribunal, over the loss of profits.

The TPP is opposed by workers, people of faith, environmentalists, and consumers in all 12 countries, not just in the U.S. We must do our part to stop it. Congress must block this agreement from going into force.

Urge Congress today to reject the TPP.

Paulo Augusto --

Wondering what the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -- President Obama's stimulus bill -- has accomplished?
Look at this:

One year ago tomorrow, after tens of thousands of you shared stories and called your representatives, the President signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

And while this anniversary isn't a cause for celebration, there is reason to be optimistic.
This chart makes it clear: We're on the road to recovery.

Still, we know there is a long way to go. Many Americans are still struggling, and creating jobs remains President Obama's top priority.

THE DISASTROUS TRANS PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP- A little long but very important

Our Revolution

This is an important email, Paulo Augusto, about how we stop the disastrous Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal.

It may be a little longer than your normal email, but we think it's very important that everyone understands both what's at stake with TPP and how we can actually win.

We're going to ask you in this email to make sure your friends and family know about TPP and have everything they need to help us fight it. That's because we don't think it's enough to just ask people to oppose TPP. We need everyone to be deeply involved if we're going to win.

Here's how we'll do it.

President Obama is the one person who can start the process to pass TPP.

Last year President Obama sought, and won, approval from Congress to "fast track" trade deals. That means that he can submit the TPP to Congress and put it up for a vote without any amendments. Congress can approve it as-is, or reject it.

That's it.

Legally, today is the first day that President Obama can do this. He's said before that he would like to pass TPP in the lame duck session.

We don't know if he's going to try this week, next week, or after the election, but we need to be ready to stop it in case he does try.

If President Obama does force a vote, realistically our best chance at defeating TPP is in the House of Representatives.

The reality of how the fast track process works is that TPP can't be amended — not a single word. It's also true that TPP can't be filibustered in the Senate.

It just needs 50 votes if President Obama decides to submit it to Congress.

We know that Bernie Sanders will oppose TPP, but the same can't be said for many other members of the Senate.

If TPP comes up in the Senate, it's likely it will pass. It's not great, but that's what we're facing.

Our best chance to defeat TPP is in the House of Representatives. If we can get a majority of members of Congress to vote no on TPP, we can win.

So we must focus our efforts there.

Wednesday is a national day of action focusing on the House of Representatives to stop TPP.

For years, a big coalition of labor, environmental, trade, and other groups has worked to stop TPP. Together these groups have millions of members who have spoken out, made phone calls, lobbied politicians, and done everything they can to stop TPP.

All of these groups and all of their members – including Our Revolution – are building towards a huge day of action this Wednesday focused on the House of Representatives.

Our goal is to place at least 50,000 calls to members of Congress and their offices on Wednesday

With your help, we're going to help lead this fight and find out where these representatives stand on TPP, and we're going to do everything we can to make sure that they know the people they represent want to defeat TPP.

We can only win if all of us get involved to stop TPP.

If TPP passes, there's no going back.

The only way to get out of the trade deal – even to change a single word! – is if every one of the 12 nations agree. That's not going to happen. So we need to defeat TPP now.

Big corporate interests and Wall Street are lining up to help TPP pass Congress when President Obama starts the fast track process. We've proven before that when enough people stand together, we can beat those special interests.

Now we need to do it again, starting with our day of action on Wednesday to reach our goal of 50,000 calls to Congress.

Paulo Augusto, this is what we need you to do:

You've already stepped up and told us you oppose TPP. That's amazing, and we're so grateful for it.

Thanks for all you do for our movement. We'll be in touch soon about how else you can help stop TPP.

In solidarity,

Larry Cohen

What is the TPP by ROBERT REICH?

What is the TPP? Here's the BEST quick explanation you're likely to come across. Thank you, Robert Reich.

Bill Moyers, one of the few remaining real journalists in this country, has called the TPP the "Death of Democracy." IT IS THAT BAD. It is a nightmare for America and for all of humanity, as well as the Earth we all share.
Obama wants to push it through Congress during the lame duck session. It's his pet project.

$hillary -- at THIS moment, when she's trying to get "elected" -- is now currently claiming to be against it, but she's not. She, Kaine & all the rest of the "Democrats" (Republicans in sheep's clothing) have pushed for it, all along.
IF NOTHING ELSE CONVINCES YOU THAT OBAMA & THE REST OF THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ARE RUN BY GLOBAL CORPORATIONS, THIS SHOULD.
I voted for him twice. He is a complete and total sellout.
The megalithic corporations that run this planet have completely taken over the American government -- BOTH sides of the supposedly TWO-party system. We have nothing but Republican corporatists on both sides of the aisle. This is why we just had a "Democratic" National Convention that was HOSTED BY REPUBLICANS and lobbyists for these corporations. Unprecedented. Shocking. Ridiculous. And extremely dangerous.

If you don't know about it yet -- and the government definitely does not WANT you to know about it -- learn about the TPP. Talk about it to anyone who will listen. Millennials and teens, educate your parents. Annoy the hell out of everyone you know. America MUST wake up and pay attention to what is going on.

The situation is dire. We are at a critical juncture in both American history, and that of the entire world.

Please share this video. If there is a demonstration against the TPP near you, make a sign & GO. Or just suit up & show up.

                        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O_Sbbeqfdw

Robert Reich
President Obama has just begun a public-relations offensive to move the Trans Pacific Partnership deal through Congress during the lame-duck session before he leaves office. But Hillary Clinton now vows to oppose the TPP -- in the lame-duck session, or afterward,
What's wrong with the TPP? Watch our video to find out. (Its corporate backers have already got "fast-track" authority to move the deal through Congress without any power to amend it, thereby greasing the wheels of this global race to the bottom.)
